■ Dialogue

Today is Martha’s birthday. So her boyfriend Terry took her to a fancy restaurant. But when they got there, there was no tables available.

Terry  : You’ll love this place. They have the best steak.
Martha: Yeah, this restaurant looks very nice. 
             Wow, there are a lot of people here.
             This place must be very famous.
Terry  : Oops, I forgot to make a reservation.
Martha: Oh, really? How long do you think we have to wait?
Terry  : I don’t know. I’ll ask the waiter.
Martha: What did he say?
Terry  : Well, he said we have to wait at least an hour. 
             I should’ve made a reservation. I’m so sorry, Martha.
Martha: It’s my birthday today. You need to pull some strings or something!
Terry  : Ok, ok. I’m kind of close to the manager. So I’ll try to pull some strings.
             Please don’t be upset and wait here. I’ll be right back!


■Translation

오늘은 마르타의 생일이다. 그래서 그녀의 남자친구 테리는 그녀를 근사한 레스토랑으로 데리고 갔다. 하지만 그들이 도착했을 때 자리는 만석이었다.

테리: 너도 이 식당을 아주 좋아하게 될 거야. 여기 스테이크가 최고거든.
마르타: 그래, 이 식당 근사해 보인다. 우와, 여기 사람 많네. 이 식당 되게 유명한가 보다.
테리: 이런, 예약하는 걸 깜빡했네.
마르타: 어, 정말? 우리 얼마나 기다려야 할 것 같아?
테리: 모르겠어. 웨이터에게 물어볼게.
마르타: 뭐래?
테리: 흠, 적어도 한 시간은 기다려야 한대. 예약을 했어야 했는데. 정말 미안해, 마르타.
마르타: 오늘은 내 생일이잖아. 빽을 쓰든지 어떻게 좀 해봐!
테리: 알았어, 알았다고. 매니저랑 좀 친하니까 빽을 좀 써볼게.
제발 화내지 말고 여기서 기다려. 금방 올게!



■ The Meaning of the Expression

＂pull some strings＂는 “연줄을 이용하다” 즉 우리가 흔히 하는 말로 “빽을 쓰다” 정도로 해석하시면 됩니다.
