One Sunday morning, Sofia and Andre met to go to the movies. While they were waiting for the movie to start, they had a little conversation.
Andre: Do you remember Richard?
Sofia: Oh, the nerdy guy? Of course I remember him. He wanted to become a novelist, right?
Andre: Right. He was working on some kind of a fantasy novel. And guess what? He finally published his first novel last month.
Sofia: Really? Wow!
Andre: I heard his novel made quite a splash among teenagers.
Sofia: That’s great! I’m very happy for him.
Andre: Me, too. He is such a hard-working person.
Sofia: That’s why his first book is so successful and attracted so much attention.
Andre: Exactly. I’ll use him as an example and do my best to accomplish my goal.
■Translation
어느 일요일 아침, 소피아와 안드레는 영화를 보기 위해 만났다. 영화가 시작되기를 기다리는 동안 그들은 잠시 대화를 나누었다.
안드레: 너 리차드 기억하니?
소피아: 아, 그 모범생? 물론 기억하지. 소설가가 되고 싶어했잖아, 맞지?
안드레: 맞아. 일종의 환타지 소설을 쓰고 있었대. 그리고 그거 알아? 드디어 지난 달에 첫 소설이 출판됐대.
소피아: 정말? 우와!
안드레: 그의 소설이 십대들 사이에서 굉장한 평판을 얻고 있대.
소피아: 잘됐다! 그 애가 잘됐다니까 기쁜걸.
안드레: 나도. 정말 열심히 일하는 사람이잖아.
소피아: 그래서 첫 책이 그렇게 성공적이고 굉장한 관심을 받나 보다.
안드레: 맞아. 나도 그 애를 본보기로 삼아서 내 목표를 성취하기 위해 최선을 다 할 거야.
■ The Meaning of the Expression
＂Make quite a splash＂는 “대성공을 해 평판이 자자해지다”라는 의미입니다. 우리도 모두 각자의 목표를 달성해 2006년에는 “I made quite a splash!”라고 말할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
