After school, Emily and Nicole met to go to their classmate Mandy’s birthday together. But Nicole looks upset for some reason.
Emily: Hey, aren’t you excited about Mandy’s birthday party? I heard many cool guys are coming, too!
Nicole: Oh well, I don’t really care about that.
Emily: Huh? It’s not like you, Nicole. What’s eating you today?
Nicole: Well, I had a big fight with my mom this morning, and it has been bothering me all day long.
Emily: What did you fight about?
Nicole: I asked her to pick up my pink dress from the cleaner’s for today’s party, but she completely forgot to pick it up. So I had to wear this lousy brown dress. I look old and fat in this dress!
Emily: No, Nicole, you look gorgeous in that dress!
Nicole: It’s nice of you to say that, but I really wanted to wear that pink one.
Emily: My birthday party is next month, so you can wear your pink dress for my birthday party! And of course I’m going to invite many cool guys from our school.
Nicole: Great! That makes me feel better. Thanks, Emily.

방과 후에 에밀리와 니콜은 반 친구 맨디의 생일파티에 함께 가기 위해 만났다. 하지만 어쩐 이유에선지 니콜은 화가 나 보인다.

Nicole: 흠, 오늘 아침에 엄마랑 크게 싸웠는데 그게 하루 종일 마음에 걸려.
Emily: 엄마랑 뭣 때문에 싸웠는데?
Nicole: 엄마한테 세탁소에서 내 핑크 드레스를 찾아놔 달라고 부탁 드렸는데 완전히 잊어버리셨지 뭐야. 그래서 이 형편없는 갈색 드레스를 입어야만 했다구. 이걸 입으면 나이 들고 뚱뚱해 보인단 말야!
Emily: 아냐, 니콜, 그 드레스 입은 거 정말 예뻐!
Nicole: 그렇게 말해줘서 고맙긴 하지만, 난 정말 그 핑크 드레스가 입고 싶었단 말야.
Emily: 다음달에 내 생일파티가 있으니까 그때 핑크 드레스 입으면 돼! 그리고 물론 난 우리 학교의 멋진 남자애들을 많이 초대할 거야.
Nicole: 좋아! 그 말 들으니까 기분이 나아졌어. 고마워, 에밀리.
■The Meaning of the Expression
"What's eating you?" 는 "What's bugging you?" 나 "What's bothering you?" 와같은 말로 무언가 언짢은 일이 있어 보이는 사람에게 "뭐가 널 괴롭히니?" 즉 "무슨 일이니?" 라고 물을 때 쓰는 표현입니다.
